Update About the Wonderful CB09 Blade Holder and Blades

***Please take a look at the update below. A new Ebay dealers link is posted and what a great deal. Updated again: 06/08/2014. :) I decided to re-post this blog in hopes of getting everyone updated with a new link with an even better price.

I am so happy! I've been using a blade holder I purchased from Ebay for several weeks but didn't want to share this news until I used it for several weeks. I decided to buy this after going through 4, yes, 4 expensive Silhouette Ratchet blades in a short time. I probably used 4 blades in a little over a month. Two of the Silhouette Ratchet blades were destroyed after hubby and I made attempts to clean out the blade housing. As much as I love my Silhouette cutting machines I can not say the same for the faulty and expensive ratchet blades. The Silhouette Ratchet blades had become a sore spot with me. They are expensive, should be much easier to clean, and should not dull as quickly as they have dulled.

When looking around for other blades I found the Ebay dealer who sold the CB09 blade holders. The blade replacements come out to only $2.83 (now only $1.70 per blade). When I first started using the blade holder I wasn't too pleased, but this was my lack of knowledge.  I spoke to my friend Kim from Scraps of Faith. She told me she loved her blade holder and blades. She was beyond frustrated with the Silhouette Ratchet blades and said she is so happy with the CB09 and will never go back to the faulty and expensive ratchet blades. Kim told me she set it to double cut and no matter what the setting she was able to get great cuts. She also told me she never changed her settings. So, I set up a CB09 blade setting of Speed- 4, Thickness - 32, and Blade - 5 and Double Cut with only exposing a rather small amount of the blade. If you purchase these blades use some scrap paper to make some test cuts to get your blade just the way you want it.

I used the above blade settings because I use fairly heavy card stock most of the time. I have cut all sorts of card stock weights with these settings. It's worked out wonderfully! I did change the blade depth and settings when I used the 60 degree blade to cut some light weight chipboard. I exposed more of the blade by turning the black knob at the top of the CB09 blade holder to a depth slightly deeper than the depth of the chipboard I slowed the speed down to 1, the blade depth to 10, and the thickness to 33 and of course, double cut. This chipboard was heavier than a cereal box weight. The results were impressive with a nice clean cut.

At first, I thought I made a big mistake purchasing the CB09. I actually purchased two of them. One to hold the 45 degree blade and one to hold the 60 degree blade. I opened the first holder and discovered it didn't fit nicely into the blade holder housing. I grabbed some sanding paper and gently sanded the area which fits into the blade holder housing. After a little sanding I got it to fit perfectly into the slot. Recently, I used the 60 degree blade and this blade holder fit without any sanding.

If it wasn't for my friend Kim I would have given up on this wonderful blade holder. I told her when I first used it the blade did a great job, but after making some adjustments to the blade settings it was awful! She told me she never changed her blade settings and just kept it on double cut. I thought, oh my, I have to set everything to double cut. Well, at the cost of the 4 Silhouette ratchet blades gone bad I would either have to give up using my cutting machine or try the CB09 holder again. Guess what? I did what Kim asked me to try and I'm in love with these blade holders. I've cut and cut and cut some more. Every time I get beautiful, clean cuts. The intricate lace like cuts are fabulous! It's so worth the extra time it takes to set it to double cut.

The new link I shared below is a blade holder with 10 blades are $28.00. The 60 degree blade is supposed to be for more intricate cuts, but honestly, the 45 degree blade did just fine.If you buy from this seller you can purchase replacement blades at 10 for &17.00. This only comes out to $1.70 per blade. What a bargain! Oh, It also includes FREE SHIPPING and a 30 day money back guarantee.

Here is a link to the Ebay dealer where you can purchase yours: UPDATED LINK 6/08/2014I've never ordered from here, but the link for the product sold by Liu was broken.  I hope everyone who makes this purchase loves this blade holder and blades as much as I do. Ebay CB09 Blade Holder and Blades

Where did you set up the CB09 settings? In the new version I can't find a blade setting to change - just from ratchet and cap blue, cap pink and cap yellow. thanks

  7. So interested to read this, Debbie. The Silhouette blade is frustrating with it's short life & as you point out, expensive too. I haven't as yet plucked up the courage to try these out but it is tempting.....

  8. Just to let you know that the eBay link doesn't work from France... sad... "access blocked du to legal restrictions in some countries". I take the opportunity with this first message on your blog to thank you so much for all the help you gave me with my cameo. I wish you all the best in you job and hope you will still be there from time to time.

  9. I am glad to know I am not the only one who has trouble with blades - I don't cut even near the amount you do - I am lucky if I cut something once a month but in the time I have owned both my SD and Cameo I bet I have gone through 10 or so blades. I will be looking at this product very soon.

  10. I'm fairly new to the Silhouette and never heard of these but am already experiencing the dull blade issue. I saw the eBay link but, what is the difference between the CB09 and CB09U. The seller's listings don't elaborate. Thanks so much!

    1. Hi booknikki, I checked into the CB09U and it seems to be the same as the CB09. I found a description somewhere and it said compatible with the Silhouette cutting machines. I love these blade holder and cutting blades. I still double cut everything but have found these blades to give the cleanest cuts and the price is wonderful. You are going to love all of the wonderful things your cutting machine will do. If you ever have any questions please feel free to ask. I'm just a notification or email away. Hugs, Debbie

  11. Debbie,
Finally got my CB09 blade holder and blades. However, some confusion here. I put in the blade and spring and don't see any blade at the bottom. I don't see a way for the silhouette to push it down and am wondering did I get the wrong one yet again or put it together wrong ... and OMG this is so frustrating! Would so appreciate your help! Thanks

    1. Hi Craftyretiredlady, Setting u the Cb09 can be a bit fiddly but it's totally worth the trouble. I just wrote to one of my subscribers the directions for setting it up and she just wrote back to let me know how much she loves it and how the difference is between night and day I want to make sure you love it just as much. Instead of typing out the directions I found this fantastic YouTube video that will show you each step. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCJhVxqaTh8 Just a little reminder; rotating the top ridged clockwise will extend the blade and counterclockwise will bring it back in. I hope this video will help you get your CB09 all together and enjoying it. Hugs, Debbie

  12. Hi, After reading here about the CB09U 60 degree blade, I purchased the holder and 5 blades to use on my Silhouette Cameo Cutter. I could cry I've become so frustrated with trying to cut a rhinestone design template. I've cut many and haven't been able to use any of them due to vinyl ears or because part of the rhinestone design is cut cleanly, than an area of the design isn't cut at all. I'm using your recommended settings when using my Cameo, which are speed 4, Thickness 32, Blade 5 (I'm not sure what this means) and double cut). I really could use some instruction. Can you help me?

  13. Hi Rosemary, the CB09 can be a little bit of a chore to get use to using. I made many test cuts before I made my cut settings perfect. I hardly ever change the settings and always double cut. I've not done too many rhinestone projects but have done many vinyl projects. This is an example of how I cut vinyl: I choose the Vinyl setting and check the double cut but never change the blade settings. Whatever media I'm cutting I select it in the settings, then choose double cut. There are many who don't double cut but I've learned this works best for me. The cuts are always so clean. I'm still using the very first blade I placed in my blade holder and have done a lot of cutting on all sorts of media. I know it's a bit fiddly at first but once you get it set you will be on your way to a lot of happy crafting. I used a lot of scrap paper to get my blade where I wanted it, but in the end it was worth the frustration. I hope you are able to get yours where you need it to be. What are media are you using to cut the rhinestone template and what version of the Studio software are you using? I'm asking because I may have some other suggestions. Best wishes and hugs, Debbie

  14. I purchased 3 of the CB09 holders with all three different blades. I too was totally sick of the expensive Silhouette blades and how hard it was to clean them out without destroying them. Love the new blades and will never use anything else.

  15. I bought the blade holder and 5 blades at the beginning of this month. I managed to get them up and working but I cannot get the blade to cut properly for me. I have tried with a simple shape and done a single cut and a double cut at each blade number (using the method described by Pete). I am now on my second blade and it still will not cut even thin cardstock. In frustration I put back the Silhouette blade which cut my project to perfection. Am I doing something wrong?

    1. When I first set my blade holder up I compared it to the Silhouette blade making sure it was on the same angle as the Silhouette blade set on a setting of 5. I never change the setting on my CB09, I always set everything to double cut. I made several test cuts as I learned how to adjust it to get the best cuts. I'm so sorry you are having such a hard time. I know it can be frustrating to get it set just right when we first start using these, but after you get it set just right the first time it will be easy from there on out and you will love the way it cuts and of course the savings. Please try again and make sure to take a look at your Silhouette blade to compare the way it's placed in the holder. Best wishes, Debbie
