Silhouette Made Embossing Folders

Oh boy! This was way too easy. After playing around with the Cuttlebug today I thought I would let my Silhouette Cameo in on some of the action in the craft room so I decided to try and make my own embossing folders using the gasket technique.

This is how I made one. I found an image on the internet of a design, I Auto Traced in in the Studio software,    duplicated it so I would have two designs for one piece of 8.5 x 11 card stock then I re-sized the Auto Traced image to fit  a 4.25 x 5.5 card. I cut out the designs, used my glue pen to glue them together ( this wouldn't need to be done if you cut it out on some light weight chipboard/cereal box  material to cut) then I cut out a rectangular shape to fit the designs on. I made the rectangle just a tiny bit larger than the design and glued the doubled up designs on the card stock. It embossed beautifully and deep.

You can use any design of your choice to make your very own embossing folders. Use the rubber gaskets and tada! you have a new, inexpensive way of making quite a big stash of embossing folders. The great thing about having a Silhouette cutting machine is; you can use the Studio software to make all of the embossing folders you want.

If you would like to have this design to cut out on  your Silhouette cutting machine you can download by clicking on this link ---->Stencil Cutting File

Here is how the embossing turned out. I was hurrying so I didn't line it up like I would if I were actually going to use it on on a card.

Another update, I had the Floral Lace Doily already cut and laying around in my craft room. It was a single layer cut on regular card stock. I thought, what the heck, try it and see if it will emboss. It did! It embossed nice. the two layer ones emboss a bit deeper but this will certainly make do if you don't want to cut two images and glue them together. Make sure you lay the design down first, then the card stock you want embossed then the gaskets.

  6. Hi Debbie,

I tried to make my own folders about 1/2 year ago, but mine did not turn out anywhere as nice as yours. I layered several files together but the embossing was not as defined. You always amaze me, I'm going to give it another whirl. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for sharing - you always provide me with inspiration.

Let me know when you would like to do the collab with Kelly and I!

  13. Debbie, thanks for sharing this idea and file! Love that I will be able to make my own embossing folders now. So fun!!! Retired and no kids at home, yet still not enough time to do all I want to do! Will the Silhouette cut out thin chipboard or a cereal box? Didn't know that. Will have to give it a try. Big Hugs!!

  15. This is so great-I would love to try this method of embossing, but I have a question--when you talk about "gaskets" what are you referring to? are you talking about the rubber layer we normally put on top of our spellbinders die when embossing? Thanks so much, Stacy

  16. Hi Stacy, they are called rubber packing sheet. You can find them at hardware stores like Lowe's. I think they are anywhere from $.98 a sheet to $1.98. They are often found in the plumbing department and they are usually 6 x 6 inch square.

  17. These are gorgeous folders. So all you did was cut 2 of the design and glue them together to adhere to the square and you got that deep of an impression..I am impressed. I need to try this. I got your flourish so guess what I am going to try first, Yep u guessed it. Thanks Love for sharing and ALL that you do. I have learned so much from you all the forum. Life is grand because of it.

  21. This embossing look great but is there any chance of you doing a video on it as I am finding it hard to understand exactly what you did to get this embossing effect I thought it was an embossing pen and embossing mat that I would need to buy to be able to emboss would be greatful for your help

  22. Hi Ambretteir, I made a video and it's here on the blog. It shows how I used the gaskets to emboss with. Here is the link: http://paperpulse.blogspot.com/2012/09/a-cheap-way-to-emboss-without-shims.html\

If you need any help please feel free to email me. My email link is on the upper right hand side. Hugs, Debbie

  23. Love your blog! I've been doing a lot of research into seals and rubber gaskets and this has really helped. Thank you!

  24. Wow! amazing and creative project.
But, I couldn't open the link to the video. Could you check it again to make it functional? Or, just explain how you used the gaskets. Just where the image would emboss on the paper?
Thanks for your generosity in sharing your ideas and solutions. NEVER would've come with this solution on my own. You're awesome

  25. What do you mean rubber gaskets? Is this some sort of attachment I need to use with my cameo to cut my own embossing folders?

    1. Hi Alex, they are the rubber gaskets you will use to run your "newly Cameo made" embossing folders through on a Cuttlebug. It helps to press the design of the embossing folders into the card stock. I hope I'm explaining this well enough. Hugs, Debbie
